Pop Up Wood

Stop being immature.  this is a wooden sculpture thing.  It’s awesome, I have no idea how long it took to make, or what was necessary to put it together, but it looks ace.

Wooden Sink

Reddit user CTpizza23 made a farm house style sink out of walnut.  It looks gorgeous, but as many of the commenters on the reddit thread mentioned, it will not last. It’s a shame that we can’t make something waterproof and still transparent, I would love to have something like this in my house one day.  Though I understand the issues with why it’s not the best idea.

Wood burning

This is a pretty neat way to make wood burning by painting, instead of using the difficult to use tips on a traditional wood burning iron.

Interactive Wooden Landscape

Valley View

This is pretty neat, ETM: Exploration Through Motion is an interesting view of a once static asset.  A team of students from the Philadelphia University created this as their final project in Design 1.  Together, they took the Thomas Moran painting “Grand Canyon of the Colorado River”, and made a 3D laser cut map diorama of it.

Turning a gear in turn turns a series of other gears that steps down the speed and ups the torque significantly.  This in turn raises internal cams, which in turn raises a base layer of dowels that finally, raises the laser cut landscape.  At first, I wasn’t sure why all the gears were necessary, I thought it was only for looks, but it’s actually quite a needed gear reduction in order to get the torque necessary to lift the heavy map.

Impressive Wooden Marble Run

The most impressive part of this marble run is the fact that much of it is carved out of food.  Look at the organic shapes made.  It must have taken the guy ages to get all that detail in it.  It doesn’t hurt that marble runs are just fun to watch.

Modern Organs

Wendell Kapustiak built a modern Pipe Organ.  Modern in the sense that naturally, it’s computer controlled.  The air is supplied by a modified server cooling fan. The keys are played by an Arduino.  And the songs are chosen by a web interfaced run on a Rasberry Pi.

It is pretty neat, I will give him that.  I do like that he used wood for the pipes.  The PVC pipes that lead to the valves though look horrible, that’s just like my opinion though.  Overall, the entire thing is better than something I could build.  I like it.

If that’s not enough Organ Pipes for you, you can head over to the National Monument in Arizona – no relation.

Wooden Cities

city table

James McNabb is a furniture maker, he uses a bandsaw to make these intricate city skylines out of discarded, and unusable scraps of wood.  I really like the above table.  Especially using the taller buildings as the legs.  It’s not practical for sitting around, or putting stuff under, but it does look cool.

While these things look cool, I can’t help but be concerned about all the dust that they will eventually collect.  All those nooks and carnies, dust magnets.

Here’s a nice video showing some more detail:

Wood Cutting

https://youtu.be/VX-U2_KOXJo

You don’t need to watch all 30 minutes of this video.  Some parts are well cut while others are static views of control screens.  It is an interesting look at how saw mills are set up to operate.  I’m particularly fond of the giant mills used to cut the giant tree trunks.  Pretty impressive.

Dangerous Woodworking

https://youtu.be/H3cXSICfMzM

There’s some pretty neat machines in here that mill wood, work with wood, and do all sorts of things to wood.  I like the bread cutting device 3 or 4 minutes in, that thing looks inefficient, but cool.  Cutting that giant cedar log down just off center though took forever.  It makes sense how slow it needs to be, but for the video, it should have been sped up.

Wooden People

Wooden Woman

Peter Demetz is an Italian sculptor of an unusual medium – wood.  I’d say that wood is potentially more difficult to work with than marble or stone.  Wood can split very easily, and if it isn’t dried well, then the entire thing can get ruined.  Marble and stone can do the same, but at least you can drop wood and not really destroy too much of it.  Hmmm, ok, maybe marble or stone is more difficult of a medium.

This one is pretty good, look at the detail in the person.  You can see the grain in her back.  It’s pretty neat.
