DIY Fountain Lights

The Fountains of Bellagio are world renowned.  In fact they are probably the one item at Las Vegas that everyone who goes there sees.  Weahter it’s by accident or on purpose, it’s hard to miss them.  I’ve spent much of a summer’s afternoon in front of them watching the different displays, and songs that they used.  They are just that fun.

Well for about $700, Scott Schneider over in Washington has built his own (smaller) version of them.  Using 3 kiddie pools, each with 5 independently powered and lighted jets, he’s able to make his own mini fountain displays.  Couple it with a computer, a custom short range radio broadcaster, 1,200 gallons of water, and you have everything you need to put on a Christmas display to put everyone in awe.

Yes, this was posted 8 months ago, but now is the time of year to watch it, not April.  So that’s why I waited to bring it to your attention.

Ballet Art

Technology is crazy now isn’t it?  Wireless things attached to other things let you make virtual things and then you can show those things in a cool video that you upload to the internet of things.

I think if they connected a few pairs of these up to a whole group of ballet dancers they could make some pretty interesting designs.  Get some different colors in it, maybe throw in a guy or two for good measure.

The Memorial

It’s taken 14 years, but the World Trade Center is finally up to its previous glory.  Complete with the memorial.  Here’s a timelapse of the 10 year construction of that memorial which opened earlier this year:

There’s not much else to say really.

Judgment Day

Three billion human lives ended on August 29th, 1997. The survivors of the nuclear fire called the war Judgment Day. They lived only to face a new nightmare: the war against the machines. The computer which controlled the machines, Skynet, sent two Terminators back through time. Their mission: to destroy the leader of the human resistance, John Connor, my son. The first Terminator was programmed to strike at me in the year 1984, before John was born. It failed. The second was set to strike at John himself when he was still a child. As before, the resistance was able to send a lone warrior, a protector for John. It was just a question of which one of them would reach him first.

If it weren’t for the brave heroics of a machine, the above photo would not have been from a test, but rather the actual missiles themselves.  Yes,  at 02:14 A.M. Eastern time, on August 29, 1997, Skynet became self-aware.  Through the technological advancements of the machines, time travel was invented.

The Terminator, was released 30 years ago, it wasn’t until Terminator 2: Judgement Day that a date was set for the actual day of judgement.  And as I stated earlier, that date is today.  If you are reading this, it means that we have successfully gone another year without Skynet becoming active.  Another year of the heroic sacrifice of The T-800.

But, lest we forget, each year we get closer to making the machines that will be our eventual downfall.  As we speak nano-bots are being researched.  Under the guise of battling (currently) incurable diseases, money is being funneled into their research and development every day.  Nothing can go wrong they say, it’s for the greater good, you’ll lives will be easier.

Don’t listen to them.  If anything this is what we as a species have the most to fear from.  Self-aware, intelligent self-replicating robotic entities are dangerous.  They are scary, they are not to be messed with.  I know I have many fears, and intangible advice, but everyone should fear this.

Now, as an aside, take a read at some of this behind the scenes info of the first Terminator film, it’s a pretty good read.

Glass Blowing

How It’s Made.  One of those shows that you don’t realize you’ve watched for 4 hours on a saturday afternoon.  Here we’re seeing glass marbles being made.  Boring marbles are made by a machine, as you would guess.  Cooler marbles are hand made, and as such way cooler.  Seriously, look at that hand made marble with the string and colors in it, pretty ace.

Mike Rowe did a Dirty Jobs segment at a Marble factory.  The ones they made there were different then the hand made one above, pretty cool, and with gold.

The Blue Angels

Blue Angels

I love me a good air show.  I’ve traveled the country to go to some, none of the “best ones” but one out at Nellis AFB, and one in Chicago.  If you’ve never been to an air show you have to go.  Try to go to one that’s at a U.S. Air Base if you can, you’ll be able to walk around and on some of the planes.  You can’t really appreciate the size of a B-52 until you’ve stood under one if it’s wings, and compared it to an F-15.  If you can’t get to a base, then you have to at least get a chance to see The Blue Angels (U.S. Navy) or The Thunderbirds (U.S. Air Force) fly.  Both put on a spectacular show, both make you impressed and wish you had better eyesight, and were just alittle shorter so that you could join their respective branches and fly.

Oh well, the above photo is a snap from the cockpit while the Blue Angels did practice over Chicago.  I’ve been the the Chicago Air Show, it’s extremely fun.  There’s just something cool about watching a fighter fly at 500mph near the skyline level.  You’ll never forget it, that’s for sure.

James Bond Plays James Bond

It’s on the short list of the greatest games of all time, I’m talking about Goldeneye 007  Did you know that that game is 17 years old?  Did you know that the movie it’s based on is 19 years old?  Did you know that we’re all getting old?

Anyway, Jimmy Fallon was “interviewing” Pierce Brosnan recently, and instead of asking questions, and doing things, he decided to challenge him to a game of Goldeneye.  However it wasn’t so much a game as “let Jimmy kill you awkwardness.”  Oh well, such is life.  Watch it or not, but I think  you should go find some friends and fire up the old N64.

A Floppy Symphony

Youtuber MrSolidSnake745 has perfected the art of using Floppy Drives to produce music.  He has an entire symphony set up from 4 up to 16 individual floppy drives used to recreate these themes.  Largely, he does Video Game music, but there’s a couple of songs in there too.  He was even commissioned by a museum to do one for Final Fantasy 7

Soviet Ghosts

Communist Train

Rebecca Litchfield has as pretty interesting photography project – taking photos of abandoned buildings from the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.  She calls the exhibit Soviet Ghosts, and there are some pretty interesting photos there.  It’s not exactly like all other photos of abandoned places.  At least these were once home to the 2nd most powerful nation on earth.

It’s interesting to see how just how far the once great nation has fallen.  Although, me calling a communist nation great has it’s problems.  I mean great in that it was able to be a credible threat to the United States of America.  But that’s the only way I’d call the USSR “great”.

Ghost 1

I like this circle building with snow in it.  I don’t know what is, her caption says it’s Freeze – Bulgaria, but it might as well be an abandoned Rebel base on an ice planet for all I know.  Pretty cool if you ask me.

But, let these photos be a lesson to you all,  Communism, not even once.

3rd Person Driving

Technology is such an amazing thing now isn’t it?  Using head mounted goggles, not an Oculus Rift this time unfortunately, and a flying drone (I hate that word drone, it’s an RC helicopter that doesn’t cost $5k), a group of British people have put together their own drive a car from the rear view angle.  Apparently it’s harder than Mario Kart would have you believe, even if there are no red shells chasing you.

3rd person view

I think they need to work on the video they’re using.  Up it to an Oculus Rift, ad I think that will help.  The 2nd thing is to get the drone to better line up with the car.  Match the distance from the back of the car better, and the turns.  I also think that they should pipe in the speed of the car, that way it’s easier see how you’re doing.  Regardless, it still looks like fun, and give it a year and I think it could be really get somewhere.  What it would be used for is another question, but hey, that’s not my job.
