National Penguin Awareness Day

I had no idea today is National Penguin Awareness Day. I had no idea that was a thing. But apparently it is, it’s a holiday, though not for the reasons above.

One of the key reasons we choose New Zealand for our Honeymoon was the chance to see Penguins. We got to see 3 or 4 of them while we were at Lake Moeraki Lodge, it took a few hours to wait for them, but it was worth it to see the ocean deposit those dumbs to the shore.

360 Photo IRL

While the above is apparently a painting, it’s still amazingly ace.  I like to take 360 photos and videos, and they are basically limited to the realm of the internetz and computer.  Thanks to the amazing people on that reddit thread, I am able to shell out hundreds of dollars for one of my own actual photos on a sphere though.  I could use Scandy Sphere and spend $500 on one, or Snapsphere which is at least $150, but I can’t seem to find pricing on a custom one.  Lastly there’s the DIY route with this video you can follow.  What is very clearly missing however is the ability to print out your sphere on paper like that.  The linked site is all in Japanese, I have no idea if you can order something or not.  Oh well, it seems like I’ll be regulated to viewing them all on my computer for the time being.

New Zealand!

It has been a long time since I have posted here.  Not quite as long as previous disappearances, though long enough.  You should be excited to know that married life is wonderful and ya’ll should take part in it.  Also, New Zealand is an amazing country, and despite loosing our luggage, our honeymoon was fantastic!

Below I’m going to give you some first hand photos of this trip, but you can find all of them and more at the New Zealand trip page.  Though if all you’re interested in is photos, then you probably will be fine checking out the New Zealand Collection.

Check out the awesome photos below though:

75 Years of D-Day

D-Day

The passage of time move slowly yet surly forward.  It cannot be stopped, rewound, or ignored.  Sometimes it seems like it’s paused when we go to sleep, but it moves on with or without our knowledge and most of all, without our blessing.  In the grand scheme of things, 75 years is not a long time.  For many millions of people it’s a lifetime.  For many thousands of people, 75 years ago was a turning point in their lives.  Today we remember the sacrifice they made to ensure freedom throughout the world.

Take some time out of your busy day to remember what happened 75 years ago.  Be thankful that you weren’t required to go through hell and back then, and be thankful that you don’t have to now.

Earth Day

Welcome to Earth, 3rd Rock from the Sun.  Today is the day that we celebrate it.  I’m not sure why, something from the 1970s.  Anyway despite what you might think you know about me, I do support the earth.  I like it, I love it, I want some more of it.  In fact, I’ve gone far out of my way to visit some of it’s most beautiful places.

Yes, that’s right, I’m talking about the National Parks of the United States of America.  Currently there are 61 of them.  (Whether or not some actually deserve to be named parks is up for debate, but not here).  I have been to 28 of them.  Not everyone is represented on my website yet as a full review, (there’s not enough time in the day), but I have photos from them all.  I’m not posting 28 photos here, just some of my favorites.  So, check out the jump, read all about it, and remember, stay in school.

Happy Birthday Grand Canyon

Today the Grand Canyon turns 100 years old.  Well, it’s actually several million years old, but the protections put in place by the great President Teddy Roosevelt are celebrated.

I’ve been to the Grand Canyon 3 different times in my life.  Nothing quite prepares you for a helicopter ride over and below the rim though.  Seriously, do it.

The edge of the canyon approaches. It’s really something that you will never forget.

Let’s celebrate the nation’s 2nd most popular national park with a toast to another 100 years of service.

Skyline Shades

Skyline Shades

The Ukraine company HoleRoll has these ace blackout blinds for windows.  Through (I assume) laser cutting fabric and material, you get a gorgeous shadow/lightbox view of either the Manhattan Skyline, the London Skyline, or the general night sky.  Unfortunately, the prices are quite high – $178 for one pane of the panel.  That’s the base price, before you put measurements in and choose other options.  I can tell you this much, I’m not about to spend over $500 on window shades – for a single room.  They look high quality, I bet I could make my own though.

The Gustav Gun

Admiring the Gustav Gun

World War 2 was the most devastating war in human history.  If we forget about the events that ended the war thousands of miles away, Germany, Europe and the rest of the combatants used plenty of conventional weapons to wreck havoc on each other for nearly 6 years.

The above shows Hitler and some generals admiring the massive Gustav Gun.  A weapon so large that it was mounted on rails.  It fired shells over 30 inches in diameter weighing 7 tons at a range of nearly 30 miles.  The main purpose was to utterly destroy the forts of the Maginot Line.  Though it was transported and used in Operation Barbarossa.

Unfortunately, it was destroyed by the Germans themselves in order to prevent it’s capture by those damned Commies towards the end of the war in 1945.  And while there have been more massively wide guns made, The Gustav remains the largest caliber rifle ever used in war time.

Check out this quick little video regarding some of the famous railroad guns:

Some of the Eclipse

Here’s some 360° video of this Monday’s total Solar Eclipse.  Witnessing this event in person was amazing.  We drove 16 hours down to Greenville South Carolina only to be stuck in clouds.

Clouds!
Clouds!

Not to worry though, because that was a major fear of ours, we were prepared and rushed in the opposite direction of the clouds.  Eventually we ended up on the border of Liberty South Carolina.  We pulled over to the side of the road with just enough time to spare to see the last of the moon cover the sun and plunge the place into darkness.

My favorite photos are available on my site under the Eclipse album.

I took many photos, which I’ve combined together into the time-lapse below:

I can’t wait until the next one graces our fine nation in the spring of 2024.  Who knows what kind of crazy technology we’ll have by then.  I can only hope though that deadlycomputer is still running strong.
