Snorkeling in a Forest

A few years ago it rained so hard and so quickly that a river flooded in Brazil and completely covered this hiking trail with many feet of crystal clear water. I know what you’re saying, when rivers flood here, they’re muddy, danger messes. Well this river is in a protected park in Brazil, and the trail is private.

The water didn’t stay up that long, by day’s end it had receded back to somewhat normal levels apparently. Still, I think it’s pretty neat. In fact, I think it’s exceptionally neat that somewhere on earth everything is set up perfectly to flood so calmly.

Earth Day

Welcome to Earth, 3rd Rock from the Sun.  Today is the day that we celebrate it.  I’m not sure why, something from the 1970s.  Anyway despite what you might think you know about me, I do support the earth.  I like it, I love it, I want some more of it.  In fact, I’ve gone far out of my way to visit some of it’s most beautiful places.

Yes, that’s right, I’m talking about the National Parks of the United States of America.  Currently there are 61 of them.  (Whether or not some actually deserve to be named parks is up for debate, but not here).  I have been to 28 of them.  Not everyone is represented on my website yet as a full review, (there’s not enough time in the day), but I have photos from them all.  I’m not posting 28 photos here, just some of my favorites.  So, check out the jump, read all about it, and remember, stay in school.

Yosemite HD Timelapse

Did you know that I’ve been to Yosemite National Park?  It’s up there as my top 3 favorites.  Along with Gates of the Arctic, and The Grand Tetons.  There’s something special about Yosemite though.  It’s one of the few parks which I’ve been to more than once.  And I’d love to go back there again and again, it’s that beautiful, and that special.

Anyway, enjoy the above time-lapse, it’s enjoyable, and at first glance the music was weird, but on reflection, I like it.

Train vs. Tornado (Tornado wins)

The captions on this video explain everything, but because I want to fill up space and not seem like I’m wasting time, here’s the meat.  A Freight train traveling through the state of Illinois “accidentally” crossed paths with a F2 tornado.  I get that trains, especially freight trains, are very difficult to stop.  Though the weather is pretty easy to predict, at least a few miles out like this tornado was.  Surely the central command new something about possible weather issues ahead.  Though, then again, Tornadoes are spontaneous.  Perhaps it did just materialize out of nowhere and toss those train cars around like a toys.

Lesson to be learned here – nature is scary, don’t mess with it.

Cast Iron Fish

Cast Iron Fish Tank

Did you know that in the Victorian era, elaborate cast iron fish tanks were all the rage among the nobility?  I didn’t.  I assumed fish tanks, because of the glass, plastic, electricity, and silicone necessary were a relatively recent commodity.  I would be wrong.  Tropical Fish Magazine has a detailed write up on what went into designing and making these fascinating works of art.  The most ornate and sought after were those made by J.W. Fiske, an Ironworks company out of New York. Now a days, ornate fish tanks can fetch upwards of $15,000.  Which if, you ask me, is far, far too much to spend on a simple (freshwater only) fist tank.  Do you realize the amount of pond I could build with $15,000?  It would be insane.  You’d never get to look at it at eye level like this.  But if I could spend $15,000 on a pond, I would make sure to have some sort of underwater viewing.  Maybe a tunnel, or window underground.  Yea, that’s right.  A window to the sky underground…

How Neat is this?

That’s pretty neat, that’s what that is. This is what I’m doing this week now, watching Nature, and all the neat things that make it up.

You should really watch the rest of the videos on the channel, they are really well done.  Don’t really take anything he says to heart though, it’s a parody account.  For the most part it’s sane information, but it’s still crazy.  And neat!

New York City – By Drone

I know this video is almost 3 years old, but sometimes it’s nice to revisit some old things, and show how times have changed, and technology improved.  In this case, the video quality is still amazing, as is the production quality.  You know what has changed, the ability to do something like this and not get arrested.

Victor Chu flew his drone around the 5 boroughs of New York City taking the above footage.  He’s pretty good with the drone, and the rest of his channel is now fleshed out with plenty of cool stuff for you to watch and enjoy.

I will say, seeing anything from above is unique, but seeing Manhattan, someplace I go to often, or at least pass by and through from above is unique.  There’s so much that you don’t notice or see in the world from the ground.

Some of the Eclipse

Here’s some 360° video of this Monday’s total Solar Eclipse.  Witnessing this event in person was amazing.  We drove 16 hours down to Greenville South Carolina only to be stuck in clouds.

Clouds!
Clouds!

Not to worry though, because that was a major fear of ours, we were prepared and rushed in the opposite direction of the clouds.  Eventually we ended up on the border of Liberty South Carolina.  We pulled over to the side of the road with just enough time to spare to see the last of the moon cover the sun and plunge the place into darkness.

My favorite photos are available on my site under the Eclipse album.

I took many photos, which I’ve combined together into the time-lapse below:

I can’t wait until the next one graces our fine nation in the spring of 2024.  Who knows what kind of crazy technology we’ll have by then.  I can only hope though that deadlycomputer is still running strong.

The Things you can do with a GoPro

For real, who would have thought years ago that we would be spending time watching animals drink water from a bucket on a farm?  This is the type of nature show you want to watch.  Except, maybe in the wild, not on a farm, with picturesque farm animals.

It is neat though seeing how the different animals take their water.. Hint, it’s all straight.

Infrared Timelapse

I do love some Infrared photography.  There’s something awesome and other-worldly about it that is so enticing.  This time-lapse of Oregon is done completely in infrared.  I will say, some of the shots are pretty lost.  The nightscapes, and the meh mountainsides, those just look like filtered B&W.  There are a few nice sections of Crater Lake though, those came out neat.

All in all, it’s not bad at 6:48 seconds long, you should watch it, time-lapses are generally beautiful experiences.
