The Great Smokies and Japan

It’s no secret that I love the National Parks. They are steeped in history be it natural, historical, or modern. I kind of knew some of the history of The Great Smoky Mountains, basically the gist of George Masa being responsible for it. However this short 5 minute video is a great retrospective of all the work he did.

It doesn’t have the production value of a Ken Burns production, but it has the knowledge, and instead of dozens of minutes of overshots, and speculation and opinions it’s a straight video on the guy and his impact.

You should watch it because it explains the most visited National Park in the country. (Which ironically I still have not been to).

Surreal Joshua Tree

Last week it snowed in Joshua Tree National Park. That’s rare because it’s a desert, but it’s also pretty frekin awesome looking as attested by this 360 video:

This was shot on the new GoPro Max. I remember that GoPro was trying to get into the 360 camera business for awhile but when I was going to Alaska they weren’t ready. I think it’s safe to say that this camera is pretty good and might be worth the upgrade eventually.

I wish I could get to a National Park right after or during a snowfall. I was in Yosemite a few years ago and there was snow on the ground, but nothing fresh. I was also in Sequoia and Kings Canyon the same time, and similarly there was snow on the ground. The closest would probably be the trip to Mount Rainier last year, it did snow on us for a bit, but only up in the elevation. That was pretty cool.

Earth Day

Welcome to Earth, 3rd Rock from the Sun.  Today is the day that we celebrate it.  I’m not sure why, something from the 1970s.  Anyway despite what you might think you know about me, I do support the earth.  I like it, I love it, I want some more of it.  In fact, I’ve gone far out of my way to visit some of it’s most beautiful places.

Yes, that’s right, I’m talking about the National Parks of the United States of America.  Currently there are 61 of them.  (Whether or not some actually deserve to be named parks is up for debate, but not here).  I have been to 28 of them.  Not everyone is represented on my website yet as a full review, (there’s not enough time in the day), but I have photos from them all.  I’m not posting 28 photos here, just some of my favorites.  So, check out the jump, read all about it, and remember, stay in school.

PARKS: The Board game

I might be alittle behind on this (the Kickstarter has ended, but was funded to over 2000%), but this looks like a pretty ace game.

There have been a few more additions to the National Parks since this was conceived and produced, but that’s the nature of the world, things are constantly changing.  I’m bummed that I missed out on this Kickstarter, but I think it would be neat to have in general.

Happy Birthday Grand Canyon

Today the Grand Canyon turns 100 years old.  Well, it’s actually several million years old, but the protections put in place by the great President Teddy Roosevelt are celebrated.

I’ve been to the Grand Canyon 3 different times in my life.  Nothing quite prepares you for a helicopter ride over and below the rim though.  Seriously, do it.

Rim View
The edge of the canyon approaches. It’s really something that you will never forget.

Let’s celebrate the nation’s 2nd most popular national park with a toast to another 100 years of service.

Yosemite is Open 360

California is on fire. (What else is new).  However, this summer fires closed Yosemite Valley for an extended period of time.  The valley wasn’t at risk of the fire, rather the wind was pushing the smoke into the valley and causing very bad air quality.  Recently the park re-opened, reddit user cesar1894 shared this video of the park created last winter:

I love me Yosemite National Park, it’s quite possibly one of the most beautiful places in the world.

Yosemite HD Timelapse

Did you know that I’ve been to Yosemite National Park?  It’s up there as my top 3 favorites.  Along with Gates of the Arctic, and The Grand Tetons.  There’s something special about Yosemite though.  It’s one of the few parks which I’ve been to more than once.  And I’d love to go back there again and again, it’s that beautiful, and that special.

Anyway, enjoy the above time-lapse, it’s enjoyable, and at first glance the music was weird, but on reflection, I like it.

Rocky Mountain!

On my ever dwindling quest to get to all the National Parks, this week I am making my way towards Rocky Mountain National Park and The Great Sand Dunes National Park.  Both of these parks are within driving distance of Denver Colorado.  I will be there for abit, you can expect my reviews of them probably in October, it takes awhile to go through all the photos I take.

If anyone wants to guess at how many photos I’ll end up taking on this trip, you have between now and October 31, 2017.  Take a guess, the winner will get a photo print of their choice from my trip!
