It’s not The 90s Anymore

But here’s a cut of a bunch of different scenes from famous TV shows and movies where someone tells someone else what decade it is and to get with the times.

It’s interesting to see how many references you can get, and then how many you actually remember watching. Either live when it happened, or in re-runs/re-watches. There’s quite a few, including the 2nd worst Die Hard.

Obi-Wan Remembers

I have never seen this fan-cut before, but it is 100% worth the watch. It’s amazing how much emotion went into some scenes with 0 backstory, but then again, that’s acting for you.

Agent Smith?!

jdbrew linked to this video explaining an insane (what I’m calling Fan) theory regarding The Matrix.

I don’t want to spoil it for you, but I understand that it’s 15 minutes long which include an unnecessary minute long intro, and (on my watch 2 (two)) pre-roll ads.

Anyway, read the title of the post, then think what Neo is supposed to be, then switch them up. That’s the gist of this theory. Yes it was posted 5 years ago, yes I am just seeing it today. Deal with it.

Contact Shot

Everyday you learn something new.  I remember watching Contact many many times, but not being a cinematographer, or really anyone with an eye for filmography, I never paid too much attention to some of the great camera work in the film.  So, that being said here’s a behind the scenes commentary on how the scene was shot:

You don’t often think of too much detailed special effects from the mid 1990s, and when you do, you usually attribute it to terrible films.  Listening to that though you realize just how much there is going on in a seemingly simple shot.

30 Years

It’s been Thirty years since Los Angeles joined the ranks of cities whose only qualification was to be a victim of a terrorist act.  Though, were they really terrorists?  Their own ranks called themselves exceptional thieves, and one-time kidnappers, not terrorists.  No Hans Grubber and his pals were opportunists, and only cared about money, $600 million worth.  A simple police officer from New York City in town to visit his wife and kids was what messed it all up for them.

Yes, Die Hard is 30 years old this year.  And last December, the Library of Congress selected Die Hard (among 24 other films) it’s …cultural, historic and/or aesthetic importance.  Yes Die Hard fits the bill for all three of those qualifications.  It’s a master piece that holds up surprisingly well given the time period.  I dare you to find another action movie from the 80s which isn’t incredible dated with cheese lines and effects.  I dare you to find another heist movie where the score is still a relevant sum of money 30 years later.  Six Hundred Million Dollars was a lot of money in 1988, it’s still a lot of money in 2018.  When it comes to money, so often the sums are in reasonable ranges for the time period and with inflation, they seem petty by current standards.  No, it will be quite a while (if ever) when $600 million is seen as petty).  Heck, even Ocean’s 11 (which itself is 17 years old already!) was only taking home $160 million.

So, take a seat, grab some popcorn, (or Twinkies), and watch this Christmas classic, even if Bruce Willis says it’s not.

Kite Rhapsody

I’m not quite sure how these people didn’t cross the lies.  Sure it won’t be terribly dangerous and deadly, but it’s damn impressive nonetheless.  Also, it’s gotta be a pretty windy day at the beach there because those kites are perfectly situated.  Honestly though, until the last minute of the song, I didn’t really see much of the song, it looks more like someone tacked on.  The last parts though make up for it, and the description itself says that it was performed in Oregon in 2012.

I’d like to go to a kite festival.  I bet it’s fun to watch.  I think you would have to be close though, and at the same angle as the people flying – perspective is everything up in the sky, and it’s easy to make things seem like they’re way off when you’re looking at them from just slightly off.  Oh well, for the summer.

Jakku LEGO Scene

This is a pretty neat diorama of a mix of LEGO scenes from the sequel trilogy.  What you can’t see from the photo is the moving ships that go around the perimeter.  Reddit video doesn’t let me embed it for some reason, so you’ll have to venture over there.

Judgement Day

We can thank our friend The Cyberdyne system T-800 Model 101 Terminator for helping us avert destruction.  At least for a little while that is, because Judgement Day can never be averted, only postponed.

Much as been said about the war between the machines and the humans.  There have been many documentaries, each of them telling a different version of the same events.  One of the commonalities they all share however is the persistence of man.  For when he is backed into a corner and all bets are off, he will do anything to prevent his own destruction.  That’s something that even a Machine was able to learn.  This leads us to hope that there will be a future where Judgement Day can be perpetually averted.

Ready Player One

I have no idea what this movie is about.  Seriously, even after the trailer, it’s not apparent what the plot of the movie is.  But there are 2 Easter Eggs in the trailer that piqued my interest.

If you want to find them for yourself, then don’t read any more.

The One

That’s what they hoped the new Xbox would be.  The One.

Well, not really, it was just based off of the love of The Matrix, and ideas that it would be a unique, immersive world.  The rest of the video goes over some of the history of how the video game console came to fruition.  The idea that the Kinect was going to re-birth the gaming system was pretty ambitious of them considering that Nintendo started that trend previously.

Any Hootie and the Blowfish, that was a pretty neat video, wasn’t it?  I really liked the part when Balmer crashed the party and insisted that the new console be a White Tower of Power.*

*Ok, I made that part up.
