The DroneDefender

Or otherwise known as basic ainti-missile countermeasures in Air to Air combat.  Granted, there hasn’t really been much civilian use for anti-missile countermeasures, but still, it’s not anything groundbreaking.

I’m sure the FCC will outlaw civilian ownership of these devices also, since they can be used for unlawful purposes, just like cell phone jamers.  Oh well, stupid government, ruining the fun for the rest of us.

An Outcome of WWIII?

The fabled World War III has been talked about since the immediate aftermath of World War II.  Well, commemorate the 70th anniversary of the ending of the War with Japan, as they called WW2, the following video has come out of China:

I can’t read, or understand Chinese, but according to mmo-champion, the message at the end of the video says:

China is strong, victorious wars require deaths; for all to be strong and safe, [we] face the risks and dangers of war. We wholeheartedly love peace, but must be prepared for the likelihood of war. We respectfully and solemnly commemorate the 70th anniversary of the war against Japan.

It’s pretty clear that the video depicts Chinese forces engaging, and winning against American forces in some sort of all out war.  It’s not clear what the motivations of these attacks are, or how accurate the outcome would actually be.  It’s also not clear if this is an official Chinese Government sanctioned video, or something someone made for fun, or a trailer for an upcoming video game.  Either way, it’s hilarious, really.

Aerial Aerobatics

I meant to post this in conjunction with this morning’s post about the air show, but I forgot.  Here are 8 different aerial combat maneuvers as carried out by a typical fighter jet.

Kulbit and Bell

The Kulbit looks like a loop, and Kvochur’s Bell looks like a stall.

Unfortunately, due to the pictograph, I would have to guess that the jet shown, it’s a MiG, but not to worry, any of the equivalent American Fighters, F-15, F-18, F-22, could perform these, and more.
Cobra and Ranversman

Cobra looks similar to a stall, Ranversman looks like The Hammer in the next picture, just slanted alittle.

Hammer and Immelman

Hammer looks like above, Immelman looks pretty standard.

Barrel Roll and Flat Spin

The Barrel Roll is pretty standard, and the flat spin is harder to complete I believe since you have to be going rather slow.  I think, if I’m remembering correctly.  I guess I could look it up, but if I say for certain something wrong, someone will correct me for sure.

F-22 Demo Air Show

I went to an Air Show this weekend, this is the awesome demo of the USAF F-22 Raptor.  It’s really something to see the abilities of the F-22.  It just sits there in the sky, being all awesome like.  It’s easy to see how it’s the most advanced fighter jet in service right now.  Forget about all the stealth capabilities, look at it stop, flip over, and slowly fall to the ground, with the pilot in complete control.  That’s impressive.

Here are some other photos of the day.

Normandy Landings

71 years ago 150,000 Allied troops led by General Dwight D. Eisenhower & Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery, went up against 50,000 Axis troops behind Field Marshal Gerd von Rundstedt and the Desert Fox, Erwin Rommel.

D-Day landing

Causalities were great of both sides, and this was an important part of the war.  By the end of the day Allied troops had control of the beaches, and linked two of them together, but it would take a week to get all 5 connected, and almost 2 months before the town of Caen was liberated from Nazi control.  It didn’t go perfectly, but as the famous quote goes: “No battle plan survives contact with the enemy.”  And there has been very few enemies like the Nazis.

Anyway, remember today, it’s nearly over, and a generation or two, or even three away from current times, people don’t understand the chaos that happened this day, or the necessity of it.  Life would be very different had it not happened.

The Great War

World War I began in July of 1914.  It changed the world.  I could go on about what changed, but you should have learned all that in school.  Oh, you didn’t, that’s right, unfortunately, The Great War, is always overshadowed by it’s younger, more deadly & exciting brother, World War II.  That’s ok, in fact, that’s completely understandable, WW2 had Adolf Hitler & Atomic Bombs, it doesn’t get much better than that.  But I don’t want to go too much into WW2 history, I do that enough as is, let’s see what World War I has to say.

Indy Neidell’s YouTube channel: The Great War, is hoping to rectify this lapse in general knowledge.  The entire intricacies of the war are intertwined, and complicated.  Plus, I really like Mr. Neidell.  He’s got a great voice, mannerisms, and general likeability.  In case you can’t watch the video, Neidell is going to go over This Week in WW1, one week at a time, from 100 years ago.  All in (100 years ago) real-time.  Most of the videos so far are only 5 – 10 minutes long, so take that much time out of your week to learn about the most important part of the last 100 years.  Without WW2, the world as we know it today would not exist.

Alternate History Thursday – Spys

SR-71 photo

In our current reality, air supremacy is the most important part of warfare.  And while the SR-71 might not play much of a role in the supremacy part of the air-force, it does play an important part in the knowledge part.

Here you can have a virtual tour inside the cockpit of that iconic plane.

And now for something, completely different:

In an alternate version of our alternate history, the SR-71 was never constructed, because it was never needed.  Air supremacy was something that was only used in the closing days of World War II.  Soon after the war ended, space became the next frontier, just like in real reality.  However, in AV-AH, space was conquered.  The Communist State of the American Continents (C-SAC) was first to launch rockets into low earth orbit, (just like in RR, those damn commies beat the democracy & freedom loving people to space).  However, their solo reign didn’t last too long.  Soon, the United Countries of Europe (UCE), manager to launch their own unmanned probes into low earth orbit.  Within years humans from both sides were circling the globe, waving at each other as they passed in private, but shooting at each other in public.

By the early 1970s semi permanent bases had been established in low earth orbit by both global forces.  No one had yet landed on The Moon, but that would soon happen.  Experts, and pundits across the globe were calling for The Moon to become the Switzerland of Space.  The one common neutral ground that didn’t belong to anyone.  The Commies wouldn’t have it, and neither would the UCE (which, unsurprisingly, Switzerland was not a member of).

UCE ships landed on The Moon first, establishing a permanent base in one of the craters.  C-SAC had a dilemma now though, land their own ships somewhere else and claim ownership of that part of The Moon, take the Swiss up on their offer of neutrality for the Heavenly body, or start a war?  Can you guess what C-SAC did?

Tune in next time to find out.

First Person Flying

Well, not entirely, but it’s still cool to see the inside of a WW2 Mosquito.  In other words, did you know there’s an entire subreddit dedicated to World War II airplanes.  It’s called /r/WWIIplanes, it’s pretty ace.{reddit}

Alternate History Thursday: Pearl Harbor

Did you honestly think that I would forget this day?  Honestly?  Come on now, don’t be silly.

USS West Virginia
USS West Virginia

There’s not much to say regarding this event in our alternate timeline.  Well, there is one major difference, the attack wasn’t on America, it was by America, on the peaceful nation of New Zealand.  New Zealand, being allied with Australia, which in turn was allied with Great Britain, was a dangerous staging post in the Pacific.  You may remember that Britain was determined on world domination, but the world had had enough.  Hitler in Europe, and FDR in America decided to team up against Britain.

Britain wasn’t convinced that America could harm them, afterall, they were surrounded by oceans, but the Communistic American Military was no match for the puny Pacific ocean. They paved the way across the ocean finally landing on New Zealand, and decimated the British outposts there.  Unlike our present reality, in this alternate one, the attacked doesn’t turn around and claim victory a few years later, they stay down.

But, that’s all in another timeline, in this timeline, thousands of Free Americans died on this unprovoked attack by the Empire of Japan.  Remember them, remember the day, let’s make sure it never happens again.

SR-71 Model

There are model air planes, there are model jet airplanes, and then there is this model SR-71.  Complete with REAL JET ENGINES.  This thing looks frekin sick.  I mean, look at it, it doesn’t look like it should fly, but it does.  And since it’s a scale model, it’s close to what the real one looks like, and is.  Did you see it take off, it looks so strange, not like a typical plane.  And turning, it’s amazing.  The SR-71 truly is the king of the skies.  I hope it’s safe to say that it will be the coolest plane that mankind has ever made.

Remember True Speed, you should read it again, it’s practically required reading when the SR-71 is brought up.
