Skyline Shades

Skyline Shades

The Ukraine company HoleRoll has these ace blackout blinds for windows.  Through (I assume) laser cutting fabric and material, you get a gorgeous shadow/lightbox view of either the Manhattan Skyline, the London Skyline, or the general night sky.  Unfortunately, the prices are quite high – $178 for one pane of the panel.  That’s the base price, before you put measurements in and choose other options.  I can tell you this much, I’m not about to spend over $500 on window shades – for a single room.  They look high quality, I bet I could make my own though.

The Cylindrical Period

This isn’t your dad’s Periodic Table.  This isn’t even your meme’s.  This is something different.

Periodic Lamp in day

Makendo from Instructables has built this really neat cylindrical periodic table lamp.  It’s pretty ace if you ask me.  Unfortunately, it requires access to a 3-D printer, or some really insane skills with a Dremel/router/bandsaw.

I like Hexagons, they are cool elements (pun intended).  I’m not that big of a fan of the color scheme he chose, but this is his lamp, so let it be.

Periodic Elements

I think it’s pretty neat that he’s attached vials containing the actual elements to each hexagon.  He only has 20 of them filled in right now, but it’s a great idea.  I do not like the way he has them protruding from the lamp.  It’s easy to get things tangled up on them.  I would have attached them horizontally across the middle of each hexagon.  Again though, this is not my lamp.

It’s neat, unfortunately, I don’t have the full means to build something this complicated just yet.  Maybe one day though.  I can add it to my collection of other things I have no place to display.

3D Metal Printing

Researchers at Harvard have come up with a way to use LASERs to anneal silver nano-particle liquid into wire that’s thinner then a human hair.  This process allow them to eject the silver liquid through a needle and have a laser solidify it instantly to print 3 dimensional wire objects.  The video above is fun to watch.  Like all current 3D printing systems, this will have a few years of refinement needed before it’s ready for prime time, but it does usher in newer smaller more curvy electronic devices.  That sounds cool doesn’t it?

Learn about LASERs

LASER is an acronym, however it’s an acronym that most people don’t even know is an acronym anymore.  I think the blame for that can be on displaying LASER in text as you would any other word, lowercase.  It stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation.  LASERs are very important to our digital world.  But did you also know that there are two main types of them?  No, probably not.

The two types are Gas and Diode.  Naturally they both have advantages and cons.  There is one thing I didn’t know though: power has nothing to do with the wavelength (color) of a laser.  That’s based on the gas used to generate the beam, or the lenses the beam travels through.  Nothing else.  Power denotes just that, the power of a beam.  Is it strong enough to light a match, pop a balloon, or hit the moon and return?  I thought color was tied to power.  I’m not sure why, I never really looked into it at all.

DIY LASER Engraver

Yesterday I shared with you a LEGO printer.  Today, I have something alittle more high-tech, a LASER engraver by reddit user WaveOfThought.

Oh, by the way, this was done in his High School Engineering class, and it only cost about $250 minus the cost of some of the wood frame, which is minimal.

Wooden RISK

It actually might come as a surprise to you,but I enjoy the game RISK.  Now, to be 111% honest, I always preferred to play Castle RISK over regular RISK, and if given the option, I’d choose Axis & Allies any day.  But all of that is neither here nor there, this post is about reddit user Corrado-Cerea, and his successful project of making a semi-permanent RISK board out of an Ikea table.

He chiseled out the borders of the countries, and then printed out the countries and shellacked them on.  It’s not a bad way to do it, it’s probably cheaper.  To be honest, I think it looks fine.  If the covering is enough to prevent the paper from pealing, I bet most people wouldn’t ever know the difference.  Look at his Imgur album of the whole process.

In true one-up fashion, 2-Skinny had his own LASER cut board to show off.  He at least painted the ocean blue, not that it really matters anyway.

I like all three boards.  I want to do something like it for myself, but I have a few issues.  1. I have no room. 2. I don’t have enough family or friends that would play Axis & Allies (because as I said earlier, I prefer that game) with me on a regular (or at all) basis to justify this.  But, either way, it’s pretty cool and maybe one day I will have answers to both of those issues.

Paper Stained Glass

Eric Standley makes stained glass type works of art. That’s not strange in and of itself.  What is strange is the medium he uses to do it.  Stacked paper cut with LASERs.
Here he talks about how he came up with this idea, and how he gets future ideas of what to construct.

Look at the depth there, it’s incredible.  The intricate nature of the cuts is only possible using a LASER, that’s for sure.  These types of art though belong behind glass, not only for the fragileness of them, but because if they got dusty, you’d never be able to clean them.  I guess the nice thing about them being manufactured by a LASER cutter is that the templates could be stored, so if a sheet were damaged, it could be replaced.  But seeing as how he’s selling these works of art, he should be destroying the files when he’s finished, this way they truly are one of a kind.
