And So It Begins

What, you thought I was going to say World War II?  That’s so typical, not everything is about the Greatest Generation.

Today marks the beginning of the school year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.  I know I keep my love of Harry Potter somewhat of a secret compared to many of the other loves I have, but rest assured, it is there, and it is a big part of my life.  I didn’t grow up on it, I didn’t even really get interested in it until the second movie came out, but from that point on I was hooked.  Few things will ever be able to compete with that I don’t think, which is sad, but that is life.

If you’ve never read the books, today would be a perfect day to give them a go.  The first two are quick reads, the 3rd one gets dark, and from the 4th onward they are larger, longer, and more dangerous.  I hope you enjoy them, let me know!

Quidditch IRL

Partially IRL that is.  You only have about 30 seconds to score a goal.  There’s no Golden Snitch, or Bludgers, and the first one to pull their parachute forfeits the game.  These Skydivers got in character costumes and decided to play a short game of Quidditch. I can’t find anything else about this stunt, but it looks like it was sponsored by a cell phone service company.  You can see some stuff on their Facebook page.

It’s slightly more dangerous then the last version of Quidditch I posted about, but I would argue that it’s slightly more fun too.  It’s probably equally as frustrating though.  I wonder how many takes this video took.

Quidditch in Halo 5

Those of you who’ve played Halo 3 back in it’s hay day know of the custom game variant of Griffball.  Unlimited gravity hammers and swords, and trying to get a bomb in the other team’s goal.  It’s more fun then it sounds.  Well, the above video is a great new take on that game variant.

Xbox user XxHugabearXx made a forge map that looks like a Quidditch Pitch from the Harry Potter Universe.  It’s a very well done re-creation of what I imagine from the movies.  The better part though is the low gravity and the hoops.  That change it from Griffball, into Quidditch.

You’ll need the map, and the Game file, both of which you can easily download for free on Halo Waypoint.

Fan-made Documentary on The Battle of Hogwarts

Harry Potter is one of my favorite book series, the films are up there on my list, but no where near the top (if only).  I don’t particularly like fan-fiction, or fan made movies, or things like that, they usually suck.  But this short film (or 10 segmented list), isn’t that bad.  It’s worth a watch if you have nothing to do and like Harry Potter.

The Greater Good

In general I’m not much for fan fiction, or non-official cannon items.  It just gets too crazy, and too quickly goes into the realm of adult oriented places that just really make no sense.

That being said, the above short film The Greater Good, is a high quality production of the falling out between The Dumbledores and Grindelwald.  Everything about it is well done and not the typical fan-fic you would think of.  And at only 17 minutes long, if you’re a Harry Potter fan you might as well watch it, what have you got to loose?

The Expanse

It’s not very often that a great book series gets turned into a great Television Show, or great Movie series.  Lately, (thanks to the success of Harry Potter), more and more beloved books have made the jump.  The latest series is one I only just started reading a last summer, and one I’m eagerly awaiting the next installment of come June.

SyFy just announced that they have a 10 episode season ordered for The Expanse universe.  The Expanse series currently consists of Leviathan Wakes, Caliban’s War, and Abaddon’s Gate.  The story of those books is set in the future when humanity has colonized the outer reaches of our solar system, and like we always do, we hate each other.  The Martians hate the Earth, and all the old money & power there.  The Belters hate the Earth and Mars, and the security of the planet’s provide with unlimited food and air, but would never be caught dead on a planet (mostly because from growing up in zero-g, the gravity would kill them).  Eathers just want to live as usual, as kings of the known universe.

It’s a rather interesting series.  In the first one each chapter alternates between the point of view of 2 characters as they race across the solar system towards the same things, not knowing they’re on a crash course into each other.  The next 2 books add more characters, and more points of view.  While this unique perspective on the story telling does force you to re-read, and re-visit parts of the story multiple times, it provides alot of insight as to what happened, and lets you see the whole picture.  I really liked it.

How this will translate onto the small screen is unknown.  I think they could do the same unique outlook on it too.  Have each episode be told through the eyes of one character.  However, while fan’s of the books might be able to follow, others would have no idea what’s going on, as the two main characters don’t meet each other until about half way through the book.  Maybe that’s an idea they can pick up in Season 2.

Anyway, for those looking to catch up on the series, buy the books.  And then watch the show, so that we can get a 2nd season out of it!

The History of the universe based on Movies

Ever wondered what happened in the year 4 Billion B.C?  Well according to 2001 a Space Odyssey, Aliens left a monolith on Earth.

Did you know that in 35,000 B.C. two cavemen in Texas met an alien in their ice cave, at least that’s what The X-Files says.

Then every 100 years for the next 3000 years starting around 3000 B.C. on October 10 the “Predators arrive for their feasting ritual on xenomorphs and humans”

Then it’s pretty much history till 993 when Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is founded.  Some more history with bits and pieces of fiction thrown in.  And in 3028 the Drej destroy the planet – Titan A.E.

All this and more is available at this extensive list of movie history.  The time line starts in the beginning, and goes to the year 800,000.  It must have taken forever to put together, and it’s really a well done list.  You kinda get annoyed with the constant repetition of the Predators part, but that’s forgivable, since it’s such an all encompassing list.
