Halo 64

Last month we saw the first trailer for Halo Infinite and it looked, underwhelming. A few weeks ago we heard that Halo Infinite is being pushed back to 2021 and I think that’s for the better.

Last week, twitter user @Hoolopee recreated the trailer in the style of Super Mario 64. Now, I don’t want to say that it’s better, but the retorness of it makes it enjoyable. Would I play this, probably as a novelty for a day or two, but I don’t think I would go as crazy all out for achievements as I currently do with Halo as it exists now.

It’s still pretty ace looking if I were to say so myself. But it also shows just how far technology has progressed since the mid 1990s.

Halo: Infinite

It’s been a long time coming, but we finially have some concrete video for Halo: Infinite – AKA, Halo 6. It looks…good:

I gotta say, the gameplay itself looks like a cross between Halo 5 and something else. What that something else is, I’m not sure. It looks fast paced and very much like H5. I was never a fan of sprint, or clamber and they’re both there, but that’s not the end of the world. The grappling hook is neat, I hope it doesn’t turn into something stupid though.

All in all, I’m excited for it. I will buy it of course, but will I play it again, or will I 100% it and then uninstall it to go back to the good ol’days? That remains to be seen.

Here’s the official trailer:

Halo Trailers

I’m not sure what caused it, but I started watching all these old trailers/advertisements for various Halo Games. There’s something about them that I don’t really remember from any other video game. Call me nostalgic, call me biased, but the marketing of all the Halos was pretty unforgettable. Be it the live action ones, the diorama ones, or the cinematic game rendered ones, everything was high quality. I remember most of these, some better than others, I remember being excited.

Like I said, I don’t know why, but I’ve watched this whole list and it’s really something different that I don’t remember anywhere else.

It’s All I Play

Sadly I haven’t had a chance to play this as often or as much as I once used to.  But this song is apt and describes some of the most fun times I’ve had in my young adult life.  I probably spent a few years of my life playing games of Halo with people young and old, men and women (though, really mostly men), and near and far.  It’s hard to describe how big of an influence Halo was on the world of gaming, it’s sort of like Super Mario Bros.  Halo 3 was my favorite of the series and easily the one I spent the most time in.  To this day I still play around in it, but I’m rusty, very rusty, and more easily frustrated and prone to controller throwing.  Anyway, Halo 3 came out 12 years ago today, fire up a game and enjoy.

Trackmania Halo Edition

Reddit user ducain23 posted a track in Halo 5 Forge which reminds me an awful lot of TrackMania.  The dumb reddit video system doesn’t let me embed videos on other places sadly, so you’ll have to go to reddit itself to view the clip, needless to say, it’s pretty cool.  I like the way he’s used the geometry to counteract gravity and keep things from falling apart.  I’m not so sure I would be able to drive on this course without falling off.  I’m totally more of a gunner, and my game stats will back that up (though they haven’t been refreshed in years sadly).

I can envision a really interesting game mode here with drivers, gunners, and passengers.  The passengers are holding a bomb and you gotta drive through moving checkpoints to drop it off.  It might work similar to stockpile from Halo Reach.  It’s a work in progress but I think it could be tons of fun.

It’s a Halo Christmas

I like the nice poem, and the overviews of the different custom made maps.  Overall the video above is a good throw back to the golden days of Halo.  I’m not particularly confident that 343 will manage to fix Halo with the eventual release of Halo 6. though I reserve the right to be wrong.  In the mean time, enjoy the video, and remember, The Forerunners are watching.

The Laser

I’ve sunk more hours into playing Halo 3 than I have done a fair amount of other things.  Many a night was spent awake with my stable of friends on Social Big Team Battle.  Usually the 8 of 12-14 of us would get together, sometimes we’d break up into two groups of 6, or 7 this way we could constantly get matched together.  Granted, this was back when there were a few thousand people playing H3 daily, but we still never had much of a challenge getting matches.

Even with all the theater, and the tools at my disposal, I rarely went back to re-watch videos of my crazy amazing kills, and crazy amazing deaths.  I was having too much fun playing the games themselves and trying to make new crazy amazing experiences.

I’m not quite sure if any video game will ever be able to recreate that level of experience I had with Halo 3.  I wore out multiple Xbox 360 controllers playing that game.  I Red Ringed an Xbox 360, and I have more deaths than kills, but I had some great time, with some great guys back in the hay day of online gaming.

I still miss it, and I want to play.  I think I will dust if off this weekend.  I just hope that I can find a match.

Installation 01

Community re-built games have a tendency to look amazing, but never get anywhere.  I’ve never heard of Installation 01, but they just released a trailer for their work, you can watch it here:

It’s a pretty damn good trailer, and it’s amazing at how closely it seems to have followed the source material of primarily Halo 3.  Though, they have no release date planned.  At least not yet.  Maybe when E3 starts next week we’ll get some more info, but I have a feeling this will be it for awhile.

All that being said, I’m not much of a PC gamer anyway, and my Xbox 360, and Xbox One still work, and the community is still somewhat present in those games, so I have plenty to play.  Due to that, I probably won’t be getting this game, or downloading it, or whatever when it inevitability doesn’t come out.

Halo SkeeBall

Halo’s Forge mode is one of those zany things that will never cease to amaze you.  Yes, there has been the more traditional death match maps made, but the video above is a version of Skee Ball, the classic arcade game where you’re not allowed to climb on the ramps.

The Art of the Title Screen

I may have posted about Naked Jakey before, or I may not have.  I’m too bothered to look up my usual post history.  I found him with his Halo Changed Everything video series. In the above, he goes over the under appreciated world of Video Game title screens.  Seriously, how often do you pay attention to those?  I like the categories he chooses, and overall, I agree with the choices.  I’ve played a number of the games he mentions, but also I’ve never played, or heard of a few of them.

It’s a good retrospective of the design, and how these subtle things can make a good game, even greater.
