Happy Birthday NPS!

100 years ago Congress created the National Park Service to oversee management and protection of the various lands that were quickly being protected by presidents and Congress.  I’m not finished visiting every park yet, there’s still 30ish left for me to get to, but I’m making a dent in the list, and that’s what matters to me.

I celebrated this year by spending 4 weeks in Alaska.  I didn’t get to every park, I make it to the hard to reach ones however.  I do not have any photos put together for Gates of the Arctic, or Kobuk Valley yet.  Here’s a photo from Wrangell-St. Elias.

Kennicott
This valley isn’t leftovers from the mine, it’s leftovers from the Kennicott Glacier. As it receded, it left this moraine behind.

Adolf Hitler Mosaic

On a cold spring day in April, Adolf Hitler was born.  Or at least that’s the official story.  You know the saying, if you went back in time to kill Hitler as a child, you wouldn’t really be killing him.  The mid-wife/nanny at the time would go steal a baby from someone else and raise it as young Adolf instead.  So in essence you created Hitler, that makes you worse then Hitler, you time traveling monster.

Luckily though, time travel doesn’t exist in this universe.  In other universes World War III was started as a time-war.  Not a time-bomb, a time-war.  It’s pretty complicated and I don’t want to go into it right now, but suffice to say, things got messy.

National Parks

NPS Logo

98 years ago the National Parks Service was created.  The first National Park, Yellowstone, was actually established about 40 years prior to that, in 1872, but like all things government, it took time for any sense of normalcy to be put into place, and in 1916, the NPS was founded.  Since 1916, the NPS has grown to encompass 401 units broken up into various different levels of hierarchy, from National Seashore, to National Memorial, to National Park.  Some monuments have been upgraded to parks, and some parks have been disbanded.  Some are one unit geographically, but treated as two separate entities, such as Denali National Park & Preserve.

Either way, the National Parks service has contributed more to the country, and to the world then you probably realize.  Take advantage of this great thing, and go out and visit a park.  There’s probably one not to far from where you live.

Alternate History Thursday – Birthdays & Anniversaries

In our current reality, yesterday marks the beginning of the American Revolution.  However, as we have so easily showed, this is not the case in our alternate version of historical events.

In case you don’t remember, our version of America is not free, (it pains me to write this), but they are communist.  From sea to sea, and pole to pole, the largest empire in the solar system, and 2nd most powerful.  Today, the 20th of April, marks the anniversary of start of the American Revolution.  But it’s not that that makes us remember this faithful day, that’s due to the birth of the European leader that helped usher Europe out of the depression, and fight the dangerous Americans from making any progress onto European soil.

That’s right, I’m speaking of Adolf Hitler, who today would be 125 years old.  In our alternate reality he really did leave for  The Moon, but not to flee, to expand the European presence in our solar system, and prevent the spread of Communism.  So far he has succeed, but ever day we are at war against the Commies.  Every day we fight them.
