59 in 59

Wrangell-St. Elias {59in59}

Long time readers will know my obsession with America’s National Parks, (just check out the tag, seriously).  It is my goal to get to all 59 (as of this publication, November, 2015), of America’s National Parks.  I’ve got a dozen down so far, but I’ve only been seriously going to them for a few years now.  Well two graduates of UVa are attempting to visit all 59 National Parks in 59 weeks.  It sounds like a pretty daunting task, and to be honest, I think it’s a little fast.  But all the power to them.

Glacier National Park {59in59}

They started the trip in June of this year, and have made it quite a-ways so far.  Their actual route has differed a bit from their planned one, but no plan survives the battle field.  They have photos posted of 6 parks so far, I choose two of my hopefully favorite parks, Wrangell-St. Elias, and Glacier to showcase above.  Aren’t they beautiful?

Telescope Photos

Amateur Astronomy has been one of my oldest hobbies.  Lately, it’s manifested itself by just taking long-exposure night shots, or time-lapses, but this past weekend, I went out specifically to look through a telescope.  An 8″ reflector to be precise.  It was a fun night, and I got some pretty neat photos out of it.  The two things I focused on were M13, and The Ring Nebula.

Here is M13, I took a bunch of shots of this, but the first few weren’t in focus, the latter ones came out decent, and I stacked them together to bring out some of the finer details and color using Deep Sky Stacker.

Ring Nebula

I really like The Ring Nebula, I was able to get some color out of that easily.

This was a nice welcome back to the world of astronomy, and astrophotography, I can’t wait for the next time I get out there with my own scope.

Canada is Pretty Too

With all this talk about my trip to Alaska, and the build up I have for it so far, it’s hard to forget our neighbor to the north.  Also, me being a die hard American, it’s hard to even fathom that I’d recommend visiting another sovereign nation.  Well, when it’s free, and when it’s apart of the same mountain range that makes up some of the beautiful parts of America, I’ll do it.  But don’t you think for a moment I recommend you move there, that’s crazy talk that is.

Banff National Park is located about 80 miles from Calgary, Albarta, Canada.  It’s just as beautiful as Glacier National Park, located just over the border in the good ol’ U.S.A.

Intrepid Travel is hosting a contest for an adventure into the Canadian Rockies.  It’s free, enter it, it will be amazing, trust me.

Here’s a video of time-lapses of Banff, hopefully that should convince you to enter the contest at least.

Milky Way

NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day the other day was a beautiful multi-shot panorama of the Milky Way over Yellowstone National Park.  When I was there back in June, it was durring the Full Moon, so unfortunately I wasn’t able to see anything as beautiful as this.  But don’t worry, I’ll be back there eventually, and I’ll plan my trip better and show up when there’s no moon.

Half Dome

So, incase you didn’t know, I’m back from Yosemite.  I’ve gone through most of my photos, any takers on the total number I took?  Come on, I’ll give you a hint, it’s more than 100, but less than 10,000.  That photo above is just one of the many you can go view.  Look at these photos!

Stay tuned for more posts and things to come.

Infrared Clouds

You might not know it, but I love Infrared photography   It really sheds some light on an otherwise invisible area.  And yes, I did just write that.

Anyway, watch the video above and see how some of

these shots look absolutely gorgeous. IR brings out the clouds, and turns the sky black.  And when the IR is converted to Black & White, it looks even better.

I have tons of IR photos to share, but alas, due to the server downtime I mentioned previously, I cannot share them at this time, sorry.
