Surreal Joshua Tree

Last week it snowed in Joshua Tree National Park. That’s rare because it’s a desert, but it’s also pretty frekin awesome looking as attested by this 360 video:

This was shot on the new GoPro Max. I remember that GoPro was trying to get into the 360 camera business for awhile but when I was going to Alaska they weren’t ready. I think it’s safe to say that this camera is pretty good and might be worth the upgrade eventually.

I wish I could get to a National Park right after or during a snowfall. I was in Yosemite a few years ago and there was snow on the ground, but nothing fresh. I was also in Sequoia and Kings Canyon the same time, and similarly there was snow on the ground. The closest would probably be the trip to Mount Rainier last year, it did snow on us for a bit, but only up in the elevation. That was pretty cool.

360 Photo IRL

While the above is apparently a painting, it’s still amazingly ace.  I like to take 360 photos and videos, and they are basically limited to the realm of the internetz and computer.  Thanks to the amazing people on that reddit thread, I am able to shell out hundreds of dollars for one of my own actual photos on a sphere though.  I could use Scandy Sphere and spend $500 on one, or Snapsphere which is at least $150, but I can’t seem to find pricing on a custom one.  Lastly there’s the DIY route with this video you can follow.  What is very clearly missing however is the ability to print out your sphere on paper like that.  The linked site is all in Japanese, I have no idea if you can order something or not.  Oh well, it seems like I’ll be regulated to viewing them all on my computer for the time being.

A 360° View of The F-35

This is a pretty good video that goes over some of the advanced features of the new fifth-generation fighter, the F-35:

It’s a nice video, the beginning of it doesn’t really merit a 360° video, but it’s still cool.  There’s alot of 35,000 foot type view information given of the different systems and how they work together on this $400 million aircraft.  The meat and potatoes comes towards the end when they simulate the view pilots have while they’re wearing the next-generation helmet which gives them all sorts of advantages in battle.  I think you should watch the full video, it’s pretty enlightening and proves how the USAF is at the forefront of design and development military might.

Yosemite is Open 360

California is on fire. (What else is new).  However, this summer fires closed Yosemite Valley for an extended period of time.  The valley wasn’t at risk of the fire, rather the wind was pushing the smoke into the valley and causing very bad air quality.  Recently the park re-opened, reddit user cesar1894 shared this video of the park created last winter:

I love me Yosemite National Park, it’s quite possibly one of the most beautiful places in the world.

To the Edge of Space

Complete in full 360° glory!  Some crazy Russians (might not actually be Russians, but rather great Capitalists!) have attached a Samsung Gear 360 camera to the tail of a MiG as it flew into the stratosphere at speeds approaching Mach 2.  I will say, traveling at supersonic speeds is one of my all time dreams, and even though the clouds of this flight were boring, the knowledge that this type of trip is offered is enough to make me super excited for getting my own $20,000 together to try myself!.

360 Drone Racing

More like a practice run if you ask me.  I’ve flown drones like this before, they are not easy to control, I know I would crash it trying to make those sharp turns.  One thing I think should be kept out of these drone videos though is the audio.  I don’t want, or need to hear the high pitched whine of the 4 small motors spinning the blades.  It’s distracting.

I think attaching a 360 camera, and flying the drones though a forest would be way cooler though.  Watching the bare concrete parking lot is pretty boring.  Maybe if there were a few other drones flying at the same time, but I guess not.

360° Oscar

This Short Film, Pearl, by Patrick Osborne is nominated for an Academy Award for Short Film at the 2017 Academy Awards.  The short itself isn’t bad, what makes it unique is that it’s shot in 360°.  Unfortunately, in my opinion, it doesn’t make great use of the 360° format.  Most of the action that happens is though one view point, sure there are some instances when they’re driving that it’s neat to see through the 360° view, it doesn’t add anything to the film.  Granted, I’m not a film critic, so my opinion is moot on the matter.  Anyway, it’s 5 minutes long, watch it, have fun.

360° DSLR

You know that I love 360° video and photo.  I think it’s the next big thing in the world of photography.  Up until now the only way to get really high quality content was to attach multiple cameras together in rigs and stitch the resulting footage after the fact.  That’s all changing now.  Sphere is a new lens that takes a full 360° by 180° image in a single frame.

This looks like it could be a game changer.  However, it looks like it will cost just as much money as a multi-camera rig.  Unfortunately most modern affordable DSLRs do not shoot 4K video (the photos themselves are over 4K resolution), and 360° is best viewed in the highest resolution possible, usually 4K is a minimum requirement.  However, since it’s a lens, as camera technology improves over time, this lens will still be useful.

No pricing is announced, you have to make inquiries.  You can rent it out though.  Something I might be interested in doing one day.

360° Cuyahoga

Here’s a 360° Cuyahoga Valley National Park.  It’s not much, I did only spend half a day there, remember.  Still, it’s cool to watch and play around in.  I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of that camera!

Katmai

Bears walking

We’re at the last of my National Park’s for the Alaska trip, Katmai.  Famous for it’s bears and Brooks Falls.  However, we didn’t go to Brooks Falls though, we spent the time in the backcountry of the park looking for bears up Funnel Creek.  Unfortunately it was late in the year for that particular salmon run, we’d have to come back in a few weeks for the next one to start.  We still saw 5 different bears, all pretty far away though.

Here, watch this 360 video of it!
