Timelapse Tree Growth

The above video chronicles the growth of a tree over the course of 5 years.  Something I’ve always wanted to do to be honest.

The below video chronicles the growth of the same tree, from a different angle, for an additional year.

R/C F-16 Drone

You know, my birthday is coming up soon, something like the above would be an excellent gift…

Apparently, this guy spent around $1,500 total on the whole system.  I love the pan-tilt he put on the Ken doll’s head.  And the hands that are just barely visible in some shots.  Very, very well done.

It really makes me want to try shooting fireworks at them now.  But then again, I don’t know if I’d be too keen on knocking down my $1,500 F-16 replica plane just to see it crash and burn.  I like the cheaper R/C plane dogfights better I think.

Custom Jurassic Park Car

Finished Car
Jurassic Park Car

It must be because of the 20th anniversary of Jurassic Park, but I’ve been seeing lots of Jurassic Park themed photos, and posts, and stuff lately.  This project takes the raptor shaped cake.

These 2 people turned a 33 year old Suburu into an ace looking Jurassic Park Jeep replica, Here’s what the car looked like when they started:

Pretty ugly...
ugly car

Nothing to stare at, certainly ain’t gonna get any looks.

cleaning & painting
cleaning, and painting

It’s getting better, gotta scrub all the grime off it, and start with the base coat.

Marking the sides
Marking the sides

Getting the Red accent marks along the sides.

Outlining the Logo
Outlining the Logo

Hand outlining the logo, cause it’s just easier that way.  They also hand drew the Dino skeleton logo on the hood, and sides of the car, it’s just too detailed to do it otherwise.

All in all they did a pretty amazing job on it.

I’d like to say that they spared no expense, but It looks like they used spray paint, could have gone for electro-coating that shit, but hey, it’s a 33 year old car, it probably wouldn’t last long enough.

Take alook at the rest of their album, 43 photos in all, they really went all out on the process.

These fail after 37,112 attempts

What are LEGO Bricks?

How many clicks does it take to get to the center of a LEGO brick? Unlike the question this is modeled on, we have an exact answer – 37,112. Well, almost exact.  You see, Phillipe Cantin tried LEGO Bricks from the 1970s.  His reasoning being he wanted to see how older bricks would fail, then switch to newer bricks.  Then change the brick type up, then add some Transformers into the mix*. Anyway, over the course of 10 days, running constantly, Phillipe got his magic number, now in true scientific fashion, he has to repeat the process a couple more times, so that he can get some more data points, then publish it, and hopefully get a PhD out of it.  That’d be so ace.

*I made that up

How Floors are made

Honestly, I’ve always wondered how those were made. Also, I’m not that big of a fan of the wide boards, I like the smaller 2.25 inch boards.  They look nicer, and are less likely to warp over time, but that’s me.

This is all good to know, since I plan on doing it all myself when I build my Dome.

Paper Parkour

This guy has skillz.  Drawing skills at least.  That and hand eye coordination, moving all the correct folded paper pages correctly, and on time.  Nicely done dude.

Alternate History Thursday – A WWII Birthday

Hitler Moasic
The famous Adolf Hitler Mosaic I made years ago.

Today is the 124th birthday of Adolf Hitler.  In our alternate reality, Hitler isn’t the horrible dictator we know him as today.  As we’ve, America is Communist, and if you know about history, and Adolf Hitler, you know that he hated Communists.  Anyway, I digress.

World War 2 went on for the same number of years, and the US still was the first (and only) nation to use Atomic weapons in anger, but the US was not seen as the great liberator of the world.  You see it’s communist, and even in this alternate history, Commies are bad.

Anyway, here’s some background on Hitler from our alternate history:

  • No Holocaust
  • Supreme Chancellor of the European Super Continent
  • Seen as a liberator

Now, granted that’s probably hard to swallow, but remember, America is Communist, anything is possible.

So, back to what makes him so great in this alternate history.  Basically, WW2 played out in a vastly different way, Hitler rose up against the renewed British colonization efforts of Europe, Africa, & South West Asia.  England has gone on a tyrannical reign of invasions, trying to regain the greatness  of The British Empire.

No one dared stop England as they slowly marched down Africa, across the Middle East, and up the generally surrounding mainland Europe.

No one but the newly elected President of the German Republic – Adolf Hitler.

Adolf Hitler wouldn’t stand for this, with his country backing him, he went to war. (This is Europe afterall, everyone hates everyone else).  Germany was easily aided by the rest of nearby Europe, France was eager to allow the Germans to enter, a chance to get back at their bitter enemies across the channel.  However, with all the resources of greater Europe at their disposal, The German Alliance just couldn’t stop the British Navy, in fact, for all intents and purposes, Germany was land locked.

In comes America.  Their vast resources form the then current 83 States, allowed them to continually barrage British naval bases, and factories along the coast of Africa & India.  Australia slayed neutral, and was better off for it.

Eventually, the Americans were able to make land fall in India, and slowly move across the Middle East, and into Northern Africa.  They moved towards the Atlantic, and before you knew it, England was at it’s knees.

The German Alliance was strong and picking at the English Air and Naval forces.  Within a year, the war was over.  England was in shambles, having had a nuke dropped on them, and Germany started the UN.

The German Alliance was strong, and surprisingly, many of the nations of Europe which Germany “invaded” or “occupied” to join forces with to defeat England were perfectly happy keeping the status quo, as the Great Depression was still fresh in all their memories, and they were afraid that with Germany pulling out, with them, all the success would go too.

So in short, Hitler was seen as the great liberator of Europe, finally putting to rest the British Empire, and all its multi-century attempts at global domination.

Tilt-Shift Pond

I like ponds, I like photography, I like time-lapses, tilt-shift I can live without, but it’s ok.  The above video combines all 4.

Now, this is a much larger pond then the ones I’ve built over the years, but that being said, if I had the space, I would totally build one this size, or better.

You should go see Elysium

Matt Damon. Si-Fi. District 9.

That’s all you need to know about the above trailer.

Hell, Matt Damon was all I needed to know, and I’m in.

This looks like a killer movie though.  And the more I see of Neill Blomkamp, the more I like.  I really think that in time, he will make a Halo film, and it will be Epic.  (Those that know me, know I don’t use the word Epic, unless I am reffering to something that will be, or is an Epic, like Ben Hur, or Monty Python.

VHS – Forever

In honor of the the 57th birthday of the VHS, YouTube has a new special mode on select videos.  Unfortunately, you have to go to the actual site to see it.  You might be thinking 57 years, that’s along time.  Anyway, go watch All Your Base, the way you’ll recount it to your children.
