Paintball Sentry

Some defense contractor should hire these people because they made a badass sentry, which is totally autonomous.

However, with the advent of AI, this could become a problem, because it’s only a matter of time before this turns from a paintball gun into an M-16.  And then it’s only a matter of time before they develope and build themselves, and start to systamatically kill us all.  Fear the robot revolution my friends, fear it for it will kill us all if we are not careful.

The Website is Down

Here’s a great little video which has a Sales Guy vs. a web dude. I love how he’s playing Halo throughout it all anyway. Oh, and the way the icons are on the desktop is priceless.

Google Finance Favicon

Well, it seems someone at Google is listening to us (but they already said they were)Google Finance has a favicon:

I like it, it fits, and it is Googly, unlike their new “g” one…

Google’s Favicon Feedback

Well, it seems that there are a whole bunch of people who don’t like Google’s new favicon that they switched to last weekJohn Michael Boling set up an internet petition to bring back Google’s old one.

Turns out that he really didn’t have to go through all that trouble, cause Google says on their Blog that they want your ideas.  And they even let you submit them! You have till June 20, 2008, so get to it!

iPohne 3G - cheaper then the iPod touch

Ever since I got my iPod Touch back in September of 2007, I have been inlove with it, and use it everyday.  Of the many iPods i’ve owned, and used over the years, this one is my favorite.  Tha beiging said, the announcment of the new iPhone 3G earlier today was a, not supprising, but b. interesting.

Straight from the source (apple.com), a new 8GB iPhone will retail for $199.  A new 8GB iPod touch, $299.  For the price of an 8GB iPod touch, you could get a 16GB iPhone in Black or White!  That is very interesting isn’t it?

One of the key differences between my choice of getting the iPod touch over the iPhone was the price.  (I am an at&t wireless customer, so no unlocking needed).  Now that the table’s have turned, and the iPhone is $100 cheaper then its strictly music based sister, I have a major dilemia on my hands.

Let’s put aside all the differences between the phone, and the music player, and just think it through this way.  Either Apple is making no profit, or taking loss on the new iPhone in order to gain market share.  Or they are moving away from the portable music industry, and into the mobile phone one.

Both scenarios I find hard to believe.  As for the first choice, well, considering that it was estimated that Apple was making up to if not over 50% margin from each iPhone v1 sold last year, it’s hard to believe that they drastically cut that margin to 5% even 1%.  Now, I will agree in a year’s time some, if not most of the components inside the iPhone have decreased in price, but to shave off 50% just seems unlikely.

Now onto the seemingly more unlikely second choice.  Seeing as how most people claim that the iPod is one of the main factors in bringing Apple as a company back from the dead, and is credited with it’s famous halo effect at increasing Apple’s market share.  But certain events need to be taken into account.  With the exception of the iPhone, the iPod has seen less new updates over the past year compared to the rest of the Apple product line.  Granted, a few processor speed bumps are no proportional in iPod terms, but, increase battery life, increase storage, and decrease prices are all things missing.

Even in the past few months, with the SDK, it’s been mostly geared towards the iPhone, whereas many of the apps will be perfectly at home on the iPod touch as well.  Is it just me, or is it seeming like Apple has been putting less into the iPod platform, and more into the other media outlets.

Steve Jobs said there were three parts to Apple today, Mac, Music (iPod, and iTunes), and iPhone.  However, the way I see things today, I see it as the iPhone, and iTunes becoming more powerful then the iPod itself.  Which could be a good thing, or a bad thing, we may never know.

Now, I could be totally, and completly wrong about all this, and in 2 weeks, Steve Jobs could announce a brand new iPod that puts everything before it to shame, and I’ll be forced to eat my words.  But I don’t see that happening.

Now I just need to decide if I want a new iPhone 3G or not…

Google’s Favicons

While doing a Google Image Search earlier, I noticed that the favicon changed from the old capital G in the Google font, to a lowercase blue g still in the same font, but much more…different.

old google

new google

That got me thinking what the other favicons look like, so I went to all the Google services I used most, and then some others, and put them in a bookmarks folder in Firefox 3 (to make it easier for me and you, only one screen shot).

Blogger

I can’t seem to figure out the reasoning behind the giving out of special Favicons to different services.  At first I thought it was by popularity, but surly, the number of people who use Google Maps is exponentially higher then those that use Google Notebook.  And why the seemingly random phase ouf of the old Google Favicon to the newer one?  I’m all for change, but I don’t like the new favicon too much, it’s not “Googleenough” if you understand what I’m coming from.

In reality though, the people in charge of each service probably came up with a favicon, and used that.  I suggest that some maybe designers use their 20% time to make some more specific favicons. I’m talking about Google Finance, that blank background is really annoying sometimes.

Note, blogger is by itself because of two reasons, 1. it took forever to finish loading, and 2. I forgot about it when it did.  If there’s any other Google services that have different favicons, please tell me, but I think I found all of them.

The Biggest Drawing In The World

Erik Nordenankar had a dream, to create the biggest drawing the world had ever seen, literally, the world.  To do that, he didn’t set out to find the biggest sheet of paper, no, he actually went small, briefcase small.  You see, his canvas was the earth itself, and his brush was a GPS enabled briefcase.

self portrait

Using a custom designed briefcase with GPS tracking software in it, he gave DHL specific instructions on where to go, and after 55 days, he had all the data he needed.  The portrait itself is massive, over 40,000 X 40,000 kilometers, in scale, and due to the technique used, the drawing is one complete brush stroke.  However, the only true way to see it is to shrink it down and put it on a map, or globe.  It is a pretty interesting, and ingenious idea.

For his next project, I think he should get a few of them traveling around the globe, for some more interesting designs.

Here’s a video of the making of it (basically just a following of the case)

The only questions I have for him is cost, it must have been through the roof!

Downtime

I’m here to appologize for the lack of posts since friday.  Unfortunately, there will be less posts as this week progresses.  I just got back from school, and I’m moving all my stuff back into my room at home, that is a less then easy task.  Also in the process, i broke the heatsink on my desktop, so I need to get a replacement for that.  I have my laptop, and I’m using that, but, I just don’t have the time or resources right now to make 2 or 3 posts a day.

I hope to get a few in before the end of the week, but it’s unknown if that will happen.  I have a graduation party to go to, and people to pick up at airports.  So, there wont be as many posts, sorry.

Indiana Jones Mosaic

In the spirit of the Giant Star Wars mosaic, I made a mosaic of the new Indiana Jones movie posters.  Unlike that one though, it isn’t gigantic wall sized, although, both posters are decently sized at 10916×16170px and 30mb each.  I also used stills from all the Indiana Jones movies, and AndreaMosaic to make it.  I will admit, I was fully inspired to make these two mosaics from the Star Wars one, so don’t even bother telling me it’s a rip off idea.

Kingdom of The Crystal Skull 1 Kingdom of The Crystal Skull 2

Here is a link to the first one (the left) (29mb)

Here is a link to the second one (the right) (30mb)

I didn’t make any adjustments to the images either, mostly because I was happy with what they looked like anyway, I see a few places where some stills could be replaced, but, it’s not that bothersome to me.

I do not like AndreaMosaic too much though, I made dozens of mosaics (most famous was my Hitler one) a year ago using a much better program, unfortunately with hard drive losses, I lost the program, such a shame, I can’t remember what it was called either, double shame.  I do know that it was a freeware Windows program, that was a .msi installer, and even though it took about 30 hours to make those high res portraits, they were flawlessly beautiful. If anyone knows what I’m talking about, please, please tell me!

One thing i noticed was lots of themes of world peace, and save the planet.  Well, i think that both of those are old, and hot button issues on the public’s mind right now.  Neither will ever go away, so there’s no use wasting time on them.  Anyway, I’m not gonna get into all that, it’s silly, and for it’s own post, so until next time…
