Everyone agrees* that Goldeneye 007 is one of the most important video games in history. Everyone also agrees that it has aged exceptionally poorly. There have been a few attempts to bring Goldeneye up to date with the latest and greatest in graphical technologies over the years. (I wish that Goldeneye Source actually had some traction, or was finished).
I learned something new about the game today while reading Wikipedia:
At one time, developers planned to implement the reloading of the weapons by the player unplugging and re-inserting the Rumble Pack on the Nintendo 64 controller, though this idea was discarded at Nintendo’s behest.
Which cites this article on nowgamer. And I have to say, with 111% honesty. That might have been the single greatest idea in the history of video games.
Yes, that sentence needs to be bolded & highlighted. If you didn’t catch it the first time through, read the idea again. That’s right, reloading you’re weapon by taking the rumble pack out, and putting it back in. This a full 9 years before the Wii, and 13 years before Kinect. And it’s not a required gimmick (as the rumble pack wasn’t required for any games on the N64), and wouldn’t feel stupid to actually do. I can say that I wish there were still devices like that on controllers where you could get that level of interaction with the game.
Anyway, that video above uses the latest and greatest graphics to provide a one of a kind experience, too bad you can’t download the ROM anywhere.
