SETI (the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence) has a list of the top 4 reasons people send in emails as to why they havent found anything yet:
1. “You’re counting on the aliens using communication technology (radio, light) that’s oh-so-last century. They will be far beyond this.”
I agree and i disagree at the same time. 1st. if alien civilizations were way ahead of us, then sure we wouldnt hear them. However, they still would have had the technology we have at some point in their development. And if alien civilizations are anything like Earth, then they still have some of that “ancient” stuff working. (ex. some deep space probe, or some guy in the desert waiting to get back in touch with his abducties)
2. “If hi-tech societies or thinking machines were out there, they’d have colonized the Galaxy by now. Clearly, we’re alone… lone… lone.”
The galaxy is just too big for any one civilization to control. Think of earth, in the middle ages, Europe thought they knew everyplace there was to know on the globe, then in 1492, Clombus goes and discovers America. So if you think that #2 is reasonable, think again.
3. “The aliens don’t want to communicate with us. Look at what we’re doing to the planet!”
Just cause the earth wont be suitable for humans, doesnt mean it wont be suitable for beings from the planet Raquitguil IVI. This theory goes with the narrowmindedness of humans. We think that life absolutly NEEDS water in order to survive, however, that was only the way life evolved on earth. On other planets, in other solar systems, with different main stars, maybe even double, life probably evolved differently.
4. “You SETI types are just looking in the wrong places. We know where the extraterrestrials are: on a planet in the Zeta Reticuli system.”
This is the best reason. And its the hardest one to be sure of. Think of K-pax (IMDb) or the countless abducties that tell us every day where the aliens are.
Anyway, its a good read for those of you interested in other life.

oh, and for the record, life exsists, we havent found it, it hasnt fount us, but it will, and it will change the way we think of everything…

You know, I agree with your last three points, but your first response does not jibe with your third, exposing the “narrowmindedness of humans.” Just because usage of radio frequencies was the first forms of non-verbal long-range communication that we used does not mean that the aliens went through the same pattern. They could possibly be “bouncing” messages “through subspace” without realizing and completely skipped over the RF phase. In that case, only some wild-eyed and exiled technician would discover our broadcasts and he’d be dismissed like our countless abductees.
now that you point that out, i agree with you, i made a boo boo, i fell into my own trap, became too narrowminded.
well, let me try to redeme myself….
first, i back my orginal statement up, the quote from the article said that radio waves were “oh last century” so this is assuming that they (the aliens) went through the same stages as us humans.
however, that is us humans being narrowminded.
well what you say can most certainly be true, meaning we would miss them, and they would miss us. however, the laws of probibility say that somewhere, someone is doing the same thing we are (thats probability more then narrowmindedness)
