A Little Alliteration
Oh I crack myself up. Anyway, Gizmodo is reporting on an Inquirer article about how the Cell processor present in the PlayStation 3 has basically taken a nose dive.
An IBM Semiconductor VP says they’re “lucky to get 10 or 20 percent” out of a chip like the Cell. The other 80-90 percent aren’t fit to be used in PS3s, meaning they either get used in another application or thrown away if they can’t be.
Oh man, IBM is saying this…it’s not even somebody like me who just hates all Sony products like they carry black death…hmm isn’t PS3 black? But I digress.
Let me tell you something, I work for a company that makes lasers. The old way of doing lasers is working just fine, they sell about 350 a year. Then there’s this new way of building lasers that I’ll admit I don’t know much about, since I work on the tried and true lasers. Well these new lasers have diodes with about a 20% success rate, meaning they have to make 5 of these suckers to get 1 that’ll be able to sell to a customer. This technically superior (in energy consumption, time, power, money) machine is selling like a corn dog covered in maggots. They sell MAYBE 40 a year, and half of those end up having to have more work done on them within the first 6 months.
It’s the same thing with Sony and the Cell processor….’cept with LASERS!
