Technically this isn’t official, but according to IGN, developer documentation backs up the rumor that the Wii will not have surround sound capabilities.

There is a single proprietary audio/video jack on Wii and users have the option to plug in different cables depending on their preference. According to developer documentation, Wii owners will be able to insert a composite, S-video or component audio/video cable into the jack, but all three come standard with stereo left and right channel audio cables.

This makes me very sad, but it will also save me some money. In order to plug an optical line into my speakers I would need to buy a digital decoder, which would cost me about $150. So now, in order to be able to plug a Wii into my speakers which only have the standard three line audio in I will have to fake surround sound and split it up. My solution:
