According to Kotaku (not exactly the best source for info but hey…I hate Sony and their source seems decent enough) Sony will not be using UMD’s in the next iteration of the PSP. Plus it may be introduced in the next 3 years. A little scared of the Game Boy Evolution? I think so.

rumor has it that Sony is currently working on the successor to the current PSP, which may (or may not) dump the current optical disc-based format in favor of solid state media and/or hard disks.

The best part of the whole article though is this:

I wouldn’t be sad to see the UMD format go the way of Blu-Ray.. I meant Beta-Max, sorry.

Oh man that’s great. As we all know…we hear at DeadlyComputer don’t like Sony prorietary formats.

But seriously…already planning a successor in the next three years when you can’t even outsell the Nintendo DS, which isn’t even a competitor? It seems to me that Sony may be jumping the gun. Or as mentioned earlier…maybe they’re just scared of the Game Boy Evolution or the rumored Microsoft “XBoy”
